If you are an addict you are well aware of the demons we face. These demons can be paralyzing.
Addictions can take you to the depths of hell. They can feel like they have a grip on you to the point you don’t have any freedom. They lock you in their prisons. Every time you attempt to break loose, they reach out and grab you and hold you with a tighter grip.
Addictions also create a vicious cycle of lies, guilt, and shame. Secrets will keep an addict sick. The shame and guilt destroy their very being. They will make addicts feel unworthy of being human or even alive. They will rob them of hope so that you succumb to them. They try to break free and the hope weakens with each unsuccessful attempt until you are broken.
Its self-reinforcing, each attempt to break loose can leave you more disheartened and thereby strengthening it’s the grip. Very similar to a Tautline Hitch:
Addictions come in various forms.
- Drug and alcohol
- Sex and porn
- Electronics (internet, social media, video games, etc.)
- Love, relationships, and co-dependence
Some addictions can have more immediate or detrimental effects than others. Heroin addiction can quickly lead someone to institutions or death. Whereas as most people live their lives fine with a social media addiction.
Also, the impact of each individual is relative to their circumstance. A wife of a billionaire, may not go homeless with a shopping addiction like a low-income single mother.
Most addicts carry on with their addictions to avoid dealing with their feelings and emotions. The majority live their whole life as an addict and avoid the hard work to seek to better themselves.
There is a solution. If you are reading this, you may be seeking it. Getting help from those that have recovered from your addiction or experts who help people recover is probably the best route.
- 12-step meetings (highly recommend this route)
- Private support groups
- Medical professionals
- Social workers
- Organized religion
This is not all inclusive list but only some that I know of.
The biggest problem in addiction is not finding the solution, it’s being willing to seek it and execute. The purpose of this post is to tell you that you MUST seek help if you want to be happy and have a meaningful life.
Many people feel that they can brush their problems under the rug and it will go away. If it “goes away” for long enough you will be recovered. This is not true. You must seek help for it and recover from the inside out.
If you don’t admit your problem and seek help, it will KILL you.
Either you will end up in jails, institutions or dead or it will chip away at you to make you feel depressed. This depression could lead you to a living hell.
If you are not sure about whether you have a problem or not, a wise man once told me:
“If you have to ask yourself if you have a drinking problem, you probably do.”
Once you seek help and start recovering you will be on your way to a life beyond your wildest dreams. That is a promise!
Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. I would be grateful if I can help you.
